On May 24, 2023, the Director of the Center for Strategic Research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Usmonzoda Khairiddin Usmon, met with the national coordinator of the program of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Nargiza Abdukadirova.
At the beginning of the meeting, Khayriddin Usmonzoda welcomed Nargiza Abdukadirova to Tajikistan and noted that her visit to the Center for Strategic Research as a factor for fortification of cooperation between the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Center for Strategic Research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
During the speech, the director of the Center noted about the changing political and economic situation of the region and the world expressed his views and assessed the issues of illegal drug trafficking, arms trafficking and other organized transnational crimes for the security of the countries of the Central Asian. Mentioned that, in the modern conditions of international relations, the main source of support for terrorist and extremist groups is the illegal circulation of drugs, arms trafficking and other organized crimes.
It was emphasized that, today in the Republic of Tajikistan, with the direct initiative of the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, regulatory and legal foundations have been created for the prevention and effective fight against terrorism and extremism, illegal circulation of drugs and arms trafficking, as well as has been established special state institutions, and infrastructure of law enforcement of Tajikistan.
It was noted that, fortunately, in our country there is a trend of decreasing illegal circulation of drugs and arms trafficking, which indicates the continuous activity of the relevant state institutions.
During the meeting, Nargiza Abdukadirova presented brief information on the main activities of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It was emphasized that the main activity of the UNODC, and the recent events in most post-Soviet countries, increase mutual cooperation in the fight against illegal drug trafficking and arms trafficking.
Nargiza Abdukadirova noted that, now in the countries of the region, the illegal circulation of drugs and weapons has become the basis for the development of crimes, analysis and study of this problem is not only for Law-enforcement agencies also we need to increase the cooperation with science-research center of the countries.
During the meeting, Nargiza Abdukadirova expressed her opinion on the main goals of the regional research on the situation of firearms trafficking and the connection between terrorism and organized crime in Central Asia, and noted that the research consists of five main parts, including issues of cooperation with law enforcement agencies and juridical, regional security threats, gender aspects, increase cooperation with scientific research institutions and present the conclusions and proposals on the fight against drug and arms trafficking are discussed.
The meeting was held in an atmosphere of good understanding.
